NAPLAN (118)

NAPLAN is the national test for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, held every year in March. It is sat online (Year 3 Writing is on paper) and has four tests: Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and Numeracy. Results are reported in four levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs additional support.

Selective High School (102)

The NSW Selective High School Placement Test is sat in Year 6 by students applying for a place in Year 7 at a selective high school. It has four tests: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills and Writing.

Opportunity Class (53)

The NSW Opportunity Class Placement Test is sat in Year 4 by students applying for a place in an opportunity class in Years 5 and 6. It has three tests: Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills.

HSC (145)

The Higher School Certificate is the Year 12 qualification in New South Wales, awarded by NESA. The written HSC exams are held in October and November.

VCE (295)

The Victorian Certificate of Education is the senior secondary certificate in Victoria, run by the VCAA. Units 3 and 4 studies end with exams held in October and November.

SACE (100)

The South Australian Certificate of Education is run by the SACE Board. Many Stage 2 (Year 12) subjects end with an external exam at the end of the year.

TASC and ACT (32)

TASC accredits the senior secondary courses in Tasmania, and many Level 3 and Level 4 courses end with an external exam. In the ACT, Year 12 students who want an ATAR sit the ACT Scaling Test (AST).

Years 8 and 10 (91)

There is no national test in Years 8 and 10, and end-of-year exams differ from school to school. These papers cover the Australian Curriculum (version 9.0) content for the year, and the NAPLAN-style papers keep the Year 7 and Year 9 NAPLAN skills going.
