Which displacement function does not describe simple harmonic motion?

  1. x=5+3cos²(3t)
  2. x=2sin(5t)-cos(2t)
  3. x=-1+4cos(7t)+3sin(7t)
  4. x=6sin(4t-π/6)
Answer

B. x=2sin(5t)-cos(2t). Option A can be rewritten using cos²(3t)=(1+cos(6t))/2, so it has one angular frequency. Options C and D also have one angular frequency. Option B contains angular frequencies 5 and 2, so it is not simple harmonic motion.
