Seven farmers each own either one or two alpacas. Counting the farmers and alpacas together, there are 54 legs. How many farmers own exactly one alpaca?

B. 4. The seven farmers have 7 × 2 = 14 legs, so the alpacas have 54 − 14 = 40 legs. That is 10 alpacas. Seven farmers owning one alpaca each would have 7 alpacas, so 3 farmers own a second alpaca. Thus 7 − 3 = 4 farmers own exactly one alpaca.
