Try a question

For real k, the lines (k + 1)x + 2y = k + 3 and 6x + (k + 2)y = 10 are coincident for which value of k?

  1. k = −5 only
  2. k = 2 only
  3. k = −5 or k = 2
  4. No real value of k
Answer

B. k = 2 only. The coefficient determinant is (k + 1)(k + 2) − 12 = (k + 5)(k − 2). At k = 2, the second equation is twice the first. At k = −5, the left sides are proportional but the right sides are not.
